Cherbourg's Deadly Young Artists Celebrated
The opening of Cherbourg Time: Young, Black and Deadly Art 2003-2007 was celebrated at The Block this week by a bus load of creative students (Laurita Alberts, 11, pictured) from Cherbourg State School, their art mentors and community elders.
Festivities included a traditional Welcome to Country by Turrbal representative Maroochy Barambah, a crowd-pleasing performance by the junior Wakka Wakka dancers and live music by the Muddy Flat Band.
A five-year art project has transformed the formerly troubled school into a community of confidence and vivid colour, with the results on display until 20 September at The Block.
