"A triumph of the human spirit," Pat Mackie
Among the most significant industrial disputes in
Australia's history, the 1964 Mt. Isa mining dispute over
workers' rights, led by a charismatic man in his trademark red
cap, Pat Mackie, lasted a marathon seven months.
The
dispute polarised the nation and saw the miners and their
community facing an uphill battle against the Company, the
State Government and even their own union.
Presented by Queensland
Music Festival and QUT Precincts, RED CAP: The
Exhibition will bring together for the first time archival
footage and media reports with Pat Mackie's personal records
of the dispute in a dynamic display of Queensland workers'
struggle for better wages and conditions.
The free
exhibition at The
Block (Creative Industries Precinct, Kelvin Grove) has
been designed to complement La Boite Theatre
Company's stage production of RED
CAP, from 19 July to 4 August.
